Microfibres/plastic are shed from your clothes in every load of the laundering process in the hundreds of thousands. Wastewater treatment plants can’t get them all – leading to extensive and continuous emissions in the quadrillions into freshwater and marine water annually – including Georgian Bay and the Great Lakes. These microfibres can be plastic or non-synthetic materials, both of which can carry chemicals from the manufacturing process and whose physical shape and chemical load can cause damage when ingested by wildlife and travel up the food chain.
In this webinar we will:
- Review newly published scientific results that demonstrate that washing machine filters effectively work to capture microfibre/plastic shed in the washing machine, and prevent microfibre/plastic emissions into water bodies. The results were from a Georgian Bay Forever/University of Toronto study carried out on 97 household washing machines in Parry Sound which diverted an estimated 179,000 to 2,707,200 microfibres per week from going down the drain.
- Learn how to scale the filter solution! We are going to help you envision the water quality difference washing machine filters applied on mass to household laundering would make. That vision can only be realized with your help. We will show you what you can do to support mass adoption of filters AND what you can do now to reduce your own household emissions.
